8.11 Safe Disposal of Hypodermic Syringes in Nurseries Procedure

This is a new policy, from January 2011.

In partnership with parents and carers, Wakefield MDC has a duty of care to maintain safety and welfare of all children who access its Early Years Services. This includes safe disposal of any hypodermic syringes found within nursery grounds

  • All staff will be inducted and instructed in the safe disposal of sharps.
  • Staff will undertake a risk assessment of all areas prior to children using these areas for outside play. This will include an examination of all areas of undergrowth and areas into which hypodermic syringes and any other related items may be discarded.
  • In the event that such items are found - staff will inform senior manager on duty.
  • Using appropriate gloves and retrieval equipment, staff will dispose of the sharps as per policy. Items will be placed into appropriate sharps bins.
  • Sharps bins will be stored in a locked cupboard with other necessary equipment being easily accessible for staff who are required to safely retrieve these items
  • Sharps bins should be used in line with recommendations, and when they contain their maximum volume collection should be arranged by contacting the call centre 0845 8506 506. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
