7.5.1 Referral Criteria for Loan of Breast Pumps

This is a new policy - January 2011.


Every pump requires a yearly check by medical physics. A decontamination form must accompany equipment.

These pumps are loaned free of charge.

The Collection system needs to be purchased by the mother, as it cannot be used by anyone else, due to risk of infection. Cost of collection system is £10, however whilst existing stock is still available collection kits can be supplied free of charge.

Pumps can be obtained from your health visiting team, local children centre or the specialist breastfeeding team.

Maximum period of loan 1 month, but this is negotiable.

To qualify for a free loan of pump one of the following conditions should apply: -

  1. Premature baby or babe with weak suck
  2. Mother and baby temporarily separated due to illness
  3. To stimulate breast milk supply
  4. Multiple births
  5. Mother has mastitis or sore nipples
  6. Mother on temporary medication that prevents baby breastfeeding
  7. Any emergency situation while waiting long-term solution
  8. To build up stored supply before returning to work
  9. Tongue Tie
  10. Special occasion e.g. night out - wedding etc.
  11. Any other following discussion with Breastfeeding specialist

The person who requests the loan will be responsible for the returning of the pump.
