SCOPE OF THIS CHAPTER
This Chapter relates to the duties imposed on Local Authorities early years provision by The Race Relations Act 1976 (as amended 2000) to promote, equality of opportunity and good relations and eliminate unlawful racial discrimination.

Policy
The Neighbourhood Nursery will:
Ensure that all children and families are given support to access the service as appropriate, regardless of ability, age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, language, asylum or refugee status.
Recognise that all children are individuals and have the right to be given opportunities and encouragement to develop to their full potential and take pride in their own identity.
Endeavour to promote the identity of individual children and families, as well as embrace an awareness and appreciation of cultural alternatives.
Value and promote a sense of rich community diversity within the setting.
Give recognition to important community celebrations throughout the year as appropriate.
Strive to work in partnership to use the experiences and expertise of children, parents, staff and members of the wider community in celebrating diversity.
Work widely with a range of local and national organisations as appropriate.
Provide a wide range of images that positively portray all members of the community in different roles.
Ensure that all children have access to the full range of resources and activities and avoid gender typical direction of roles.
Provide dual language books, music and materials to give appropriate support and recognition to other languages and cultures.
Recognise that all children learn differently and adapt the activity to meet the child's needs and maximise learning opportunities.
Create an environment of trust and respect, where children can express feelings and learn right and wrong without adult judgements or use of language based on gender bias or other stereotypes, i.e. boys don't cry, girls don't climb trees etc.
Confront negative attitudes and behaviour towards individuals or minority groups through sensible discussion.
Have regard to the United Convention on the Rights of the Child and how this impacts on the setting.
Should any person believe that this policy is not being complied with it is their duty to bring the matter to the attention of the Manager at the earliest opportunity.
