9.6.3 Bathrooms and Washing Facilities |

1. Context and Scope
The Children Act 1989 and the Care standards Act 2000 provide the legal context for this procedure. The National Minimum Standards for Children's Homes, 2011 provide the particular context and scope and stresses, not only the need for sufficient facilities but also the need for young people to have their privacy respected when washing and toileting.
2. Procedure
| 1.0 | There should be at least one toilet for every five children or young people accommodated at the Home, with nearby hand washing and drying facilities. There should be a minimum of one bath or shower available for every five children or young people living at the Home. |
| 1.1 | The location and design of bathroom and toilet facilities should take into account the need for privacy, dignity and safety. And should be readily accessible from both sleeping and recreational areas of the Home. Showers that are not provided within individual rooms should be made completely private. |
| 1.2 | Staff (but not young people) should be able to access bathrooms and toilets from the outside in case of emergency. |
| 1.3 | Staff should use separate toilet and bathroom facilities to young people. |
| 2.0 | Hot water outlets should be maintained at no more than 43C particularly in relation to younger children or children and young people deemed vulnerable in this respect. |
