8.13 Accident, Emergency and First Aid Procedures

This policy was significantly amended in January 2011. It should be read in its entirety.

In partnership with parents and carers, Wakefield MDC has a duty of care to maintain safety and welfare of all children who access its Early Years Services.

Ensuring the Availability of First Aid

  • First aid boxes should be visible and easily accessible to all staff.
  • Any item used from the first aid box should be reported to the designated first aid officer and/or the nursery Manager by the end of that day.
  • A weekly check of the first aid boxes will be carried out and the stock replenished by the designated first aid officer.
  • Whenever first aid is given the appropriate accident form will be completed in line with Local Authority Health and Safety Policy
  • Managers will ensure staff training is kept up to date.
  • A copy of all current First Aid certificates will be kept in the staff files.
  • During outings a travel first aid kit should be taken and at least one member of staff on the outing should hold a full first aid certificate.

Procedures should a child sustain an injury:

In the first instance, first aid will be administered in accordance with recognised training. A qualified first aider only shall administer first aid. Protective clothing should be worn at all times. Parents will always be notified if first aid has been given to their child. In addition to first aid measures, in the event of a judgement being made that a child has sustained an injury requiring medical treatment parents will be contacted immediately using the contact details on the child's registration form. The Manager will assess the situation and decide whether the child needs to go immediately to hospital or whether the child can wait for the parent/main carer to come. In the unlikely event that a parent cannot be contacted immediately, the senior staff member will assume charge and if necessary accompany the child to hospital ensuring that they take all the child's relevant personal details. (See Parental Permission Form) The child must be transported to hospital in an ambulance The setting will continue to attempt to make contact with the parent/carer.

Staff accompanying children should not sign consent for any treatment to be carried out. Delivery of treatment without consent of parent or carer with parental responsibility is the responsibility of hospital personnel

An accident form must be completed and an assessment made as to whether the accident needs reporting under RIDDOR and to OFSTED or Social Care Direct.
